Name: Ariya Kareen
Age: 20
Race: Human
Class: Mystic monk
Guardian Force: Namazu, giant catfish of cataclysm
Namazu's description on Wikipedia
Namazu is the herald of blind force of nature, neither for good or bad he fight, as he simply causes these cataclysms by living as the gigantic fish he is.
G-Force ability:
(On Earth) "Trembling ground"
Namazu jumps back and forth on the ground, causing a massive earthquake around and possibly falling on opponents.
(Underwater) "Sea catastrophe"
Moving forcefully the water around, Namazu causes a powerful tidal wave. Yes, underwater it's REALLY dangerous, but it also hit the surface.
(Surface) "Rainbow splash"
The magnificent rainbow caused by Namazu's jump in the water bolster Ariya's abilities and to a lesser extend her allies'.
Weapon:
Rainbow colored ki waves
Ariya's fighting style is an unnarmed one that instead turns the ambiant magical flow into a pure power flow. What the tradition named the 'rainbow colored ki' is in fact a condesed version of residual spells, liberated from their natural sources. Each energy form has a corresponding frequency and as such cause the sound/light emission which in turn gave it's name to the style.
Well released by a professional, the energy flux is strong enough to hurt like a solid would do, the combination of a high energy density and the speed at which it is manipulated being what can make it lethal for anyone... especially the user.
Abilities:
Seven sonic colors strikes:
Ariya's techniques are divided into eight different strikes (one of these being a limit break), each being an extension of her body and as such reinforcing her attacks and defenses. Her Rainbow colored ki can be colored with any of these forms or stay as a mixed flux without any properties.
All strikes share a common property: if a corresponding spell has been cast since Ariya's last post, then it increase the strike's power accordingly.
- Red Do of war (Fire)
The first strike. It is fueled by fire magic. At that frequency, the damage are usually the highest, but few students of the way know how to manipulate ssuch a powerful flow without causing harm to themselves. It is inspired of FF I's Warrior job.
- Orange mystical Re (Cure)
The second strike. Told to generate a field repelling necromantic magic, it is indeed effective against many undead forms as it get its power from healing spell remnants. Minwu's wisdow from FF II lies behind the origin of this form.
- Yellow swift Mi (Lighning)
The third strike. Fast as the lighning is the way this attack goes. Also, the speed is enough to generate high intensity static fields, which tend to be harmful to any electronics nearby. Ninjas from FF III mastered this attack.
- Green Fa of the guardian (Guardian force spirit)
The fourth strike. It replicate a lesser version of her Guardian force's ability by striking either the ground, the water or the border between the two. Tied to Rydia, FF IV's summoner.
- Blue dragon Sol (Ice)
The fifth strike. This diving attack calls the chill of the upper winds with it, which signs the start of plant's winter nap and the end of some of the hottest creatures. Hiryus are said to fly toward these altitudes in FF V.
- Indigo magical La (Time)
The sixth strike. The improbable attack comes from the past to hit the future... in essence, the first thing someone would notice is a hit landing randomly, missing its target. But when the same attack repeat itself a couple second later without warning, few opponents can understand the link between these moves. Never underestimate FF VI's Quick spell.
- Purple Si of love (Esuna)
The seventh strike. Devized to hunt down the wicked and the corrupted, the purple strike is also used to purify allies from the tainted's touch, making it a support strike as well. It is the enboidiment of FF VII Aeris' love.
Rainbow whirl:
While the strikes are mainly focused offensives moves, the whirl is the actual opposite. Meant as a defensive shield againg magic and ranged attacks, the short range colorful shockwave generated can also hurt anyone at close range around her. The intense spinning required to generate the flux doesn't allow the defensive barrier to stay up for long befre turning the user dizzy.
Iridescent rain:
This technique requires the presence of water, be it in the form of rain or spray or whatever related in fashion. Using light's reflexion, Ariya can expand her control over the colors of magic, allowing to regulate the flow as she wish. It is used to reinforce or weaken elements as she wishes, as long as the condition is met. Without it, the range is not enough even for personal use.
(((Thunderous stomp))):
Channelling all her ki in her legs, Ariya stomps the ground forcefully. It generates a massive shockwave propagating in the ground, shaking anything it goes through. The magical energy flows in the ground and can be seen as a colored wave extending from where she hits, ressembling the full circle rainbow. It is to note that the massive outburst generate a massive bang, which is what gave this technique its name.
Frequence shift:
Infusing a part of her magical ki with her hands, Ariya can change colors on touch, altering the hue to create a sort of "palette swap" of what she touches. Drawing a complex pattern is next to impossible, as the effect doesn't last for very long, around 10 minutes at best. In a similar fashion, sounds can be altered to be made more or less louder, altering the pitch and so on. Both effects are the results of the same property, so a sound modification will cause a color change too.
Limit Breaks
Seven folds barrier:
Invoking the seven powers, Ariya surrounds herself in her fighting school's ultimate barrier, which has seven colored layers. The more colors are present, the stronger she gets, her corresponding strikes being decupled. However, such a high level control on the usually untamed magic is hard to maintain. Each subsequent posts see one of the color fading away. Additionnaly, if a magical effect happened to hit her using an element still present in the barrier, she could remove it to either increase or alleviate its effect. The limit ends when all seven colors fades out.
Rainbow Impact:
The final strike. Hitting with all seven flows at the same time, Ariya unleashes her almighty blow to the target. The effect of such a hit is rather interesting: the opponent will start to glow in various colours at the same time as if he became a prismatic kaleidoscope. Meanwhile, the sonic impact is resonating in the poor target's body. Larger creatures are less prone to the attack which is alleviated by a greater dispersion. Magic power, however, are the exact opposite: the more magical the target, the stronger the inner wave will explode in a flash of light.
Appearance:
Rather tall (1m76) and muscular (79kg) due to her intense training, you wouldn't expect this from such a cute girl. It's easy to see her as a stranger, too, because of her tan skin, not that usual for people from Dollet. her eye color is blue-grey, which reinforce her cuteness.
Her naturally black hair are usually dyed in a dark toned color (she has a preference for red) and tied in a long braid hitting below her back with seven long ribbons tied into these, one of each colors in the rainbow from red to the top to purple at the bottom. Her civilian outfit usually carry her color-loving theme, including lots of laces and other flowing pieces of clothing to the mix. However, her floating clothing usually carry a sense of rigidity, as everything that is tied is held in place tight. She also sport a iridescent one-piece swimsuit during training, as she loves swimming.
Personality:
Optimic positivism is the way of the rainbow! Well, it's an exagerration, but that's what Ariya is looking for: being the angelic smile that is the rainbon after the rain. As such, she always try to act friendly toward everyone and usually consider violence only to calm down people, not more. As such, some may call her a coward for running in front of weaker opponents that she has no reason to harm.
Apart for the colorful manifestation, there's several things she likes. Fist, she has gotten fond of water in general and freediving in particular. She also have liking for many artistic forms like music, painting or storytelling. She actually prefer the artist part in martial artist. Sport is also a way to feel free and release any tension she could have, which explain her desire to participate to the Blitzball team.
Want to get her attention? Flowers works remarkably well (in fact, she also like ikebana). However, there's several things that makes her sad. Seeing two people arguing will easily get on her and she usually feel the need to intervene, even when she shouldn't. Also, rain has the strange property to calm her... see her backstory for an explanation about this. You'll never see her hid from it under an umbrella by the way.
A small quirk about her is worth mentionning: she has a deep aversion for closed vehicles since what happened 8 years ago, be it cars, trains and so on. She prefer being outside whenever possible in these case.
Biography:
Dollet. Several months before the invasion, residential area
I was 11 at that time... waiting for the bus for school. My family... well, foster family... wanted me to grew up so I wouldn't be a shore for them. I hardly felt anything good in my youth days and I don't think they even loved me. Well, there I am under the rain. My long, dark hair I used to have at that time seemed to be part to the seemingly neverending waterfall. My dark robe added one last sad touch to the black and white picture of my former life. I hated that rain... it was cold and made everything around looks like twisted, broken versions of themselves.
But then, I didn't felt it on me anymore... I wasn't aware of the man who approcahed me by behind. He had a really large build, a strange white beard and was globally really imposing. So imposing, in fact, that I stayed there, looking at him without saying anything. I was way too much intimidated! But he smiled to me... something I wasn't expecting: it was one of those warm, sincere face you have when you're feeling good for someone. Only then I noticed he was holding an umbrella and protected me from the falling water with it. We stayed like that some what seemed an eternity... in the silence of falling rain. And then my bus arrived. Not really sure if I should leave, the man simply smiled and nodded me to climb the two metal steps standing in front of me. This is what I did...
Then all the other rainy days afterward, it was the same thing. He would come with his umbrella, caring for me as no one ever did before... yet, I was scared at first. I took several of his apparitions to simply try to talk to him. Not really sure what I wanted to say to him, though... at least I had to say "hello" to him. He smiled back. "Hello". It was awkward at first... at such a young age, you do not really know what to do in such situation and I bet my hesitations were noticed by him. That's why he decided to be the one talking first.
"I bet you do not like the rain, eh?"
"No... not really" I answered softly.
"Well... that's normal. People doesn't like those who are sad..."
I guess my surprised look was expected, as I couldn't know what he was talking about.
"Say... I suppose you don't know what rain really is, right? Well... it is tears."
I was completely amazed by this revelation back in these days. I mean... I didn't know about the science behind it. But wait, it gets better.
"In the sky live angels... you may have heard of them right? Well, they watch us from the clouds. Sometimes some of them begins to love humans and feels compassion for them... but sometimes too, humans... die."
When he said this, I understood a little more my place in the world for the first time. Until then, I never really had anyone I cared for and no friends to tell either... I suppose you could say I was very lonely... it was, as far as I remember, the first time someone talked to me as a person, instead of an useless child...
"When someone that was liked by angels die... they simply can't help it. They regroup themselves... and cries in harmony."
He was far from being the smiling man I started to know by then. The sadness seemed to have struck him in the heart, assassinating his kindness in appearance.
"I... want to cry with them too... I do not want Kareen to be sad alone. I bet that's why angels never seems to cry alone."
I didn't quite understood everything, but... somehow I felt bad for that man. Something in me told me that his like had been harden than I imagined it at first. And... who was that "Kareen"?. I was about to ask about it, but my bus arrived. Frankly, I didn't want to get in there. I wanted to stay with the old man.
He put down his umbrella... the rain... I didn't notice, but it stopped...
"Now... see what the angels leaves when they stop crying? The most beautiful sight ever... their present sadness is what remind us of their past happiness... and that former thought can only be seen by the purest eyes."
He was looking in the direction my bus would go. In front of us standed the most wonderful sight I was even given in my life. The purest rainbow ever was shining with all its colors across the clearing sky. It was heartwarming... yes, I guess I smiled.
"Go... get the rainbow while you can. It's toward your school, isn't it? Then climb... and don't stop until you catch it!"
I just couldn't resist these words... I litteraly jumped in, and instead of getting a lone seat near the end of the bus, I stayed here, looking in front of me, hoping I could see where the rainbow was landing. Of course... it vanished. At first, I hoped I could see it again, but I knew little of what was happening at the same time. I hoped I could have a better chance at finding it tomorrow, but I never got to leave my house. For a good reason.
Remember... it was 8 years ago... when Galbadia invaded the city. I was forced to stay at home for the rest of the week as the fighting ensuing outside prevented us to get out anyway... it was horrible and I wasn't the only one thinking the same. The rain constantly filled the horizon... I too, was crying... which disappointed my forster parents, again complaining that they shouldn't have had taken care of me. That I was only good for nothing. The truth is... I wasn't crying from fear as they were thinking, but because I knew that outside, people died. It was a shocking revelation to understand what empathy really mean. Up until then, never I would have cared for people I didn't know, but now that I saw and heard the angels crying in unison as a painful chorale I couldn't help but join them. But on the third day... it stopped. Rain let place to another rainbow... from my house, I could easily tell where that one was landing... I wanted to see it that time, the end of the rainbow... Not caring much for my own security or my adoptive parents' opinion, I went outside.
Yes, I know it was a bad idea but I should remind you I was a broken little girl, with nothing to lose except for my life. So I ran from the house, heading to the origin of my new hope: toward Lapin beach. It wasn't that surprising when you think about it, but I should mention it: if I could reach the beach without being noticed, it was mostly due because soldiers were not that many and those who were around weren't paying attention to civilians anyway. Moreover, the current situation was... how to put it... rather chaotic. The explanation for this was the strange boats I saw when arriving on the beach's sand. What was a group of SeeDs landed there... I was of course oblivious of what they were, or why they were there. All that mattered was were did the rainbow landed, but I couldn't find a hint about it... was I mistaken? I was slowly doubting about what I have done... when events decided to take care of me.
One of the SeeDs noticed me and approached, seeming to be caring for my presence...
"Hey little miss? You shouldn't be playing around you know?". The man seemed kind and made it sound like nothing was happening. Somehow I think he hoped to hide an innocent child the war's horrors. It was kind of him to do so, but badly timed as the sound of a metalic construct approached from our postion. I heard some woman shouting to fall back and I honestly didn't know what to do. The man however did for me and grabbed me before entering their boat. I saw a huge spider thing coming on our way... I guess that's the last time I soiled my clothes in my life, but it was damn scary! The heavy sound of what was a chaingun is the only other thing I remember besides this.
As you can see, I was almost abducted in the operation... for my own sake but still! I guess these first days at Balamb got over me. I was so hoping to see my home again and going back to school... oh and seeing that old man again, too! But when they came to tell me that those I described to them didn't acknowledge having a child! I learned years after this they simply didn't want me anymore and did not fell anything toward a child that wasn't theirs. I can understand their feelings but I never hoped or desired to see them ever again. Also, I asked abut the old man. I knew by now where he lived, but to my despair, he was... killed, during the assault.
With no one else to take care of me, I was rather solitary... but the man from Lapin beach came to see me several hours later. He was looking at me with a big smile that I couldn't quite understand, but what he wanted to tell me was something I couldn't forget.
He asked me this: "Well, you're not having anywhere to go, all because of me, right? Care if I take the responsability of my act by asking you if you want to stay with me?"
That was an odd way to put it in word... still trying to lighen the mood I suppose, but it didn't work that much. Well, not more than the next thing he tried. "You know... I don't think the whole idea of having a second child older than the first is rather logical, but I guess Tomi wouldn't mind... Well, maaaaaaybe amaya would be jealous, but I'm not going to say I can understand girls anyway!"
... And he kept talking. I lost track of his babbling soon, but his final question sent me back to my thoughts. "So, now you need a new last name, then. Any idea?"
Now that's not the kind of question you're supposed to have a readied answer, right? So of course I tried to think for a second.
"I don't know... Pinecone? Azerty? Or even something as stupid as Takeshii, who know? But if of course you know anything that could be good..."
Something? Anything? But how am I supposed to choose? That was so random I couldn't even manage to think about that right now. If anything, I would have prefered the old man to be my father instead, but I didn't even knew his name... wait, there is still one thing I knew from him... "Kareen"
I guess he liked it as he smiled again. But that was really strange... whe he did, I think I saw a rainbow. Someone explained me it could be ligh on his teeth, but I do not believe it. What I guess it meant is an angel became happy. Whoever it was I was hoping I wouln't disappoint him or her.
And that'how I happenend to become a Balamb student. everything afterwards is another story!
RP Sample:
About two years ago...
It was one of those calm winter night at Balamb garden. Lessons were over and some students were already sleeping, while the other were finishing their homework or having some fun before calling it a night.
... when a loud noise, similar to an explosion, resonated in the entire building. It wasn't that strong, but it was definitivrly a deep bass sound that could be heard far away. At first, it made people wonder what it was, some students and teacher went around to look for the source. Then another boom... not as loud, but still easily percepted around... it seemed to come from the training hall so a small group decided to go investigating, following the now increasing impact sound melody... which was really strange, when you thought about it: since when explosion follows a musical pattern?
When the students arrived they were not expecting to see Ryuzaki and Ariya in the middle of a training session! In fact, it was Ariya hitting a strange looking sandbag under his master and adoptive father and as improbable as it sonded, each hit causing an intense sound to be transfered to the ground by three metal feet in rhythm.
The rainbow musician stopped playing upon seeing people coming in the hall and she and her master removed the protective earphone they were wearing. Then, she turned in their direction:
"Hi all! You came to listen to my music? That's nice of you!"
No need to add that the group was a tad little irritated by this, but they still stayed calm and wanted an explanation.
"See that sandbag here? It was designed as a large resonating chamber inside. Depending where hit, I can change the octave."
She points out at two white strips on the bag.
"And with my special rainbow technique, I can create any note I desire. So I can make music while training and thus I can work my rhytmic and aim at the same time."
Then she turned toward Ryuzaki.
"But I guess we should be tuning it down, daddy Ryu!"
"I guess so, my student..."
"Oopsie! I meant master Takeshi!"
It was obvious none took the situation that seriously,; but seeing they agreed to stop for the night, and the time being it is retuned to not cause earthquakes, the students went to their room, leaving them alone.
And then, they both laughed at this.
"Eh eh, looks like you like your birthday present, Ariya! Now I'll need to find something for Tomi's 18th birthday too!"
"A statue of him?"
"Eh, I guess he would like it, but I wanted something more personnal..."
"... Made of rice cake!"
They both looked at each other after that comment, before bursting in a terrific laugh.
"You surely like your brother! Okay then, full scale rice cake Tomi it is!"
They exchanged some more jokes while leaving, but among all of this, the master had a question.
"Say, why did you wanted such a powerful instrument to begin with? There are many electronics way to accomplish what you wanted without going that overboard, you know?"
Ariya's answer was surprisingly sounding more serious than his question. "Well... I wanted to make sure the angels could hear my music from their clouds..."
Ryuzaki knew the real meaning behind this. She still want to relieve herself from that incident 6 years ago.
"Don't worry... you could play with a rubber made triangle, your music would still be heard by everyone... thanks to your kind heart..."
ariya smiled kindly to herself, those were such kind words...
"... Even if it would give a headache to the recording studio!"
"DAD!"
And they continued walking away laughing at each other, in that dark, calm winter night...
